TEXT: The Apostle’s Creed and Associated Scripture

DESCRIPTION: Have you ever just wanted to go back to the basics? To hit the reset button and return to your core Christian values? There is a way to do this, rediscover the Apostles Creed! The Apostles Creed is the most widely used creed in Christian worship in the western world. The lines of the Creed are not just mere words to chant, they are the essence of what we believe and confess. The Apostle’s Creed was born out of the teachings of the twelve Apostles. It contains the essential doctrines and beliefs of the Gospel and the foundation of our faith. The scriptural truths contained in the Creed enable us to build a foundation for our Christian lives on good theology, knowing our faith is rooted in truth and a rich history. The term “Creed of the Apostles” appears, for the first time, in a letter written by Ambrose, one of the early church fathers, from a Council in Milan to Pope Siricius, in about 390 AD. However, the Creed may have existed in a simpler form as early as the late 2nd century. The Creed was widely used by Charlemagne (742-814 AD) (the first Holy Roman Emperor) and throughout the dominions he ruled. The Creed was primarily used, first, as a confession of faith for those about to be baptized, second, as a catechism, or essential instructions, for new believers, and third, as a “rule of faith” to give continuity to orthodox Christian doctrine. This message takes a closer look at each of the twelve points of the Traditional Version of the Apostles Creed.
